Corrugated Product Information

Corrugated Board Construction
Corrugated Board is a combination of paper materials from which corrugated packaging is made. Single wall corrugated board consists of three paper components.
The Outer Liner: generally high quality.
The Flute: which separates the liners and gives corrugated it's strong rigid properties.
The Inner Liner: important for strength but usually less important from the aspect of appearance.
Double Wall: corrugated fibreboard has an extra centre-wall and two sets of fluting, generally of different flute height and pitch.

Fluting
The Flute is produced by two main processes. The first uses recycled paper with added chemicals and starch which produces a strong sheet with excellent flutability. The second process, known as semi-chemical, reduces wood to its component fibres by the use of both mechanical and chemical means. Flute in most general use is configured in five ways:
F Flute: A very fines flute, also known as micro-flute, which is used for corrugated 'cartons'. Offers very good crush resistance and rigidity.

Flute
E Flute: A fine flute used for corrugated 'cartons'. Benefits are excellent crush resistance and a compression strength better than solid fibreboard.

Flute
B Flute: Easily the most widely specified flute profile due to its superb robustness, good compression and its compactness minimising storage space.

Flute
C Flute: A larger flute than 'B', which offers greater compression strength, however it may be crushed more readily. Takes up more storage space than 'B' flute.

Flute
Double Wall: A combination of two flute sizes, usually 'B' and 'C', generally specified when compression strength is more important than robustness and storage space.

200 lbs. TEST VS 32 ECT (edge crush test):
  • Overall stronger/thicker box.
  • Greater stacking strength.
  • 50% more side wall bursting strength.
  • Longer/stronger fibers due to more virgin pulp content.
  • Pound test refers to bursting strength.
  • ECT refers to stacking strength.
Closest Equivalents:
  • 32 ECT - 200# test.
  • 42 ECT - 200# test DW.
  • 44 ECT - 275# test.
  • 48 ECT - 275# test DW.
  • 51 ECT - 350# test.
  • 82 ECT - 350# test DW.

CORRUGATED BOXES
box RSC
Also known as a Regular Slotted Carton, this is the most commonly produced box at PackAndSeal.Com. All flaps have the same length and the two outer flaps (normally the lengthwise flaps) are one-half the container’s width, so that they meet at the center of the box when folded. This is a highly efficient design for many applications and there is very little manufacturing waste. PackAndSeal’s RSCs can be printed in as many as 4 colors. _______________________________________________________________
box DIE CUT BOXES
A die cut box has a unique design that requires angular, circular, or other unusual cuts, slots, and scores. Die cut boxes may also feature perforated lines, ventilation holes, or access holes. PackAndSeal’s die cut boxes can be printed in up to 4 colors.

Recycling
Many government agencies, and the public in general, are demanding products with a higher recycled material content, and corrugated containers are no exception. Presently, almost two thirds of all container board used in the U.S. has a recycled component. The recovery rate has increased from 46% in 1985 to 62% in 1996. PackandSeal.Com receives its paperboard from a variety of manufacturers, and our finished products have an average recycled content of 50-60%.

If your specifications demand a higher recycled material percentage, please call us and we will make every effort to assure compliance.

The selection of joint type (stitch vs. glue) may impact the practical recyclability of the container. If your organization has implemented its own program, the recycler may not accept boxes with stitched joints. While inherently stronger, the staples may have to be removed to insure compliance. The glues used for box joints are water-based and are therefore recyclable.

For further information regarding recycling of corrugated containers and materials, contact the Corrugated Packaging Council at (800) 879-9777.
